A Daughter Keeps Her Promise
A
daughter searches for a way to keep her job while providing her elderly
mother with affordable quality care.
Three years ago,
Carolyn’s now 95-year-old mother, Mary, began to lose her vision. She
had central vein occlusion of the retina, and after two laser surgeries
and an invasive retina surgery, her vision was still substantially
damaged.
Carolyn had made
a promise 11 years ago to her mother that she would do everything in her
power to not move her into a nursing home. After seeking out several
resources that were too expensive or too far away, Carolyn was
devastated that she may have to break that promise.
Finding Help
After a year of
searching for an answer, Carolyn was about to give up when she was
notified about a program entitled Adult Day Services, where her mother
could go during the day and get the socialization and attention she
needs while Carolyn continues to work at her job.
Adult Day
Services, provided through Catholic Charities and funded by United Way
of the Plains, is a program designed for adults 55 years and older who
are living with a disability, including loss of vision. The focus of the
program is to help individuals maintain an active and productive life
while providing temporary relief for caregivers. Included in this
program are a variety of activities including cognitive stimulation,
social interaction, physical activity, reading, excursions and more.
Quality
Workers, Quality Care
Carolyn and her
mother stated that Adult Day Services program is so great because of the
level of interest and care the faculty and staff members give their
patients.
“The staff and
volunteers really care about her and have her best interests at heart,”
said Carolyn of her mother. “Mom has commented on how she always has
someone at her side to describe things to her.”
One of the best
things about the program is the relief Carolyn receives knowing that she
can continue her job while her mother receives quality care five days a
week.
“I have the
peace of mind that my mother is in a safe place with friendly, loving
people,” said Carolyn.
According to
Carolyn, Catholic Charities’ Adult Day Services provided the relief,
social interaction and security she and her mother needed.
“I know both of our lives would be quite different today were it not
for Catholic Charities,” she said.
